Support for Students Where They Learn and Grow
School-Based Therapy in Asheboro
At Providence Counseling and Wellness, we believe that mental health support should be as accessible as possible for children and teens. That’s why we partner with local Asheboro schools to provide school-based therapy, bringing our compassionate, professional counseling services directly to students in the familiar environment of their school.
We help students navigate emotional and behavioral challenges so they can get back to focusing on what matters most—being a kid.

What is School-Based Therapy?
School-based therapy is individual counseling that takes place at your child’s school during the school day. A licensed therapist from Providence Counseling and Wellness meets with students one-on-one in a private, designated space to work through the challenges impacting their well-being and academic success.
This model removes common barriers like transportation, parent work schedules, and the stigma sometimes associated with leaving school for an appointment, making consistent support a seamless part of a student’s week.
Benefits of School-Based Mental Health Support
Increased Accessibility:
Therapy is available right at school, making it easy and convenient for students to attend sessions consistently.
Reduced Stigma:
Integrating mental health care into the school day normalizes seeking help, just like seeing a school nurse or counselor.
Improved Academic Focus:
By addressing underlying issues like anxiety, trauma, or friendship problems, we help clear the emotional barriers to learning.
Stronger School-Home Collaboration:
With parent/guardian permission, we can collaborate with teachers and school staff to create a consistent, supportive network around the student.
Early Intervention:
We can identify and address concerns early on, preventing them from escalating into more significant challenges.

How We Help Students
Our school-based therapists are experienced in helping K-12 students manage a wide range of concerns, including:
Anxiety & Worry (test anxiety, social anxiety, general overwhelm)
Emotional Regulation (managing anger, frustration, and big feelings)
Depression & Social Withdrawal
Peer Relationships & Bullying
School Avoidance & Behavioral Issues
Coping with Family Changes or Grief
Improving Focus and Self-Esteem
Trauma & PTSD
Our Approach to School-Based Counseling
We use age-appropriate, evidence-based techniques to connect with students and facilitate healing.
For Younger Children:
Therapy often looks like play. We use games, art, and creative activities to help them express themselves and learn coping skills in a way that feels natural and safe.
For Teens & Adolescents:
We provide a confidential, non-judgmental space for talk therapy where they can process the pressures of academics, social dynamics, and family life.
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of our practice. What a student shares in session is private. We maintain close communication with parents/guardians about their child’s general progress and collaborate with school staff only on a need-to-know basis to support the student’s success, always with written consent.
The Process: Getting Started is Simple
Identification:
A teacher, school counselor, or parent may notice a student could benefit from extra support.
Referral & Consent:
The school will connect with the parent/guardian to discuss a referral. A Providence Counseling and Wellness team member will then reach out to explain the process and obtain consent.
Assessment:
Our therapist will conduct an initial assessment with the student to understand their needs and goals.
Regular Sessions:
The student will begin meeting with the therapist for regular, scheduled sessions at school.
Collaboration:
We partner with parents and school staff (as appropriate) to ensure the student is supported in all areas of their life.
Frequently Asked Questions for Parents
Is school-based therapy confidential?
Yes. Sessions are confidential, and information is only shared with parents/guardians or school staff when necessary and with proper consent, or in the case of a safety concern. We will discuss the limits of confidentiality with you and your child.
Will this disrupt my child’s academic day?
We work closely with school staff to schedule sessions at a time that minimizes disruption to core academic instruction, such as during a study hall, elective, or lunch period.
How do I know if my child is a good fit?
If your child is struggling with their emotions, behavior, or social interactions in a way that is impacting their happiness or school performance, they could benefit. Common signs include changes in mood, difficulty with friends, frequent visits to the nurse, or a drop in grades.
Do you accept insurance for school-based services?
Yes, we bill through the student’s insurance, just as we would for an office visit. We are in-network with several providers. Please visit our Insurance & Payment page for details.
